Pictures from Millikan Cup 2014, March 22nd, Jordan Lake, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It was a spectacularly beautiful morning for a regatta. Millikan Cup is the first race of the season. Micah Boyd, Head Varsity Coach, wants this to be an important annual race for North Carolina rowing club schools. This year the schools participating were Duke, UNC, High Point, Wake Forest, Davidson, and NC State. There are many different races but the winner of the Varsity 8 takes home the Millikan Cup. I interviewed Micah about the different phases and specific challenges of the 2000-meter race, and had the opportunity to speak with the rowers as well. Everyone agreed that the most difficult part of the race was the grueling third 500!
This weekend, May 24-25, is the biggest race of the season, the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) Championships in Gainesville, Georgia. I'll be there via the livestream. Go Tar Heels! http://www.americancollegiaterowing.com/ I am very excited to announce that the violin soloist for Millikan Symphony will be Jennifer Curtis. Jennifer is from Chapel Hill but has lived in NYC for many years. Don Oehler (Music Director, Chapel Hill Philharmonia) introduced us in March during my last trip to NC. Jennifer immediately connected with the concept and creative process of the piece. We will have two opportunities to work together in Saint Paul as I compose the 4th movement. Our first meeting was yesterday! Pictured is Jennifer playing through what I've written so far. It can be a bit unnerving, as well as exciting, to put your music in front of a musician when much is still unknown and embryonic. I began composing Millikan Symphony this month, starting with the 4th movement, and only have about 3 minutes written. Jennifer is deeply musical and present. I came away inspired, my ears filled with her rich bold sound and expressive playing. I look forward to continuing to work together! Happy Spring! I’m off to North Carolina in the morning! I’ll be attending the inaugural Robert C. Millikan Epidemiology Seminar and the Millikan Cup. To quote Professor and Department Chair of Epidemiology Andrew Olshan, “This is an important annual tribute to Bob and his life’s work and a very useful lecture for our students and faculty.”
Robert C. Millikan Cancer Epidemiology Seminar Reproductive Factors in Relation to ER- Breast Cancer in African American Women: Results from the Black Women’s Health Study and the AMBER Consortium Julie R. Palmer, ScD Professor of Epidemiology Slone Epidemiology Center at Boston University Date: Friday, March 21 Time: 1:00 Location: 2301 McGavran-Greenberg Hall It will be great to have a chance to hear Julie Palmer speak about this important project. I will also meet with two of Bob’s doctoral students to collaborate on the Science movement of Millikan Symphony. I can’t wait to hear what ideas they have! Science and music share many structural elements. I look forward to discovering how cancer research can make its way into the music. On Saturday the Millikan Cup takes place at the crack of dawn on Lake Michie. UNC Head Coach, Micah Boyd, wants this to be an important annual race for the North Carolina rowing club schools. This year the schools participating are Duke, UNC, High Point, Wake Forest, Davidson, and NC State. There are many different races but the winner of the V8 takes home the Millikan Cup. You can bet I’ll be out in the launch filming! I will pay special attention to the arc of the 2000 meter race for the Rowing movement of Millikan Symphony, and will be asking Micah lots of questions while we are out on the water. Look for pictures and videos in the days ahead! |
