Here it is, the complete Millikan Cup 2013 video with music from Millikan Symphony, III: Rowing!
I shot the video of Millikan Cup 2013, May 5th, Lake Michie, Bahama, North Carolina. The soundtrack is from the world premiere of Millikan Symphony by Chapel Hill Philharmonia on March 20, 2015. I scored the third movement of Millikan Symphony, Rowing, to this video, and after studying many race videos. The tempos are based on the actual stroke rates for the 2000 meter race. Special thanks to novice coach Adam Cottrell for steering the launch!
This video represents the beginning and culmination of my collaborative process with the UNC/regional community for “Honoring the Life and Legacy of Robert C. Millikan”, which we celebrated March 20-22, 2015. My first trip to NC was in May 2013 to attend UNC Men’s Crew practices leading up to the Millikan Cup, the annual regatta in honor of my brother Robert Millikan. Bob was the UNC Crew faculty advisor for over sixteen years. I also attended a concert by Chapel Hill Philharmonia on May 5th, returning three weeks later to meet with Donald Oehler, music director, for the first time. Here we are two years later, after an amazing weekend of events, with this wonderful video to share. Enjoy!
