Today is Bob's 63rd birthday. This is when I usually focus on celebrating Bob and his legacy. I often post about the Robert C. Millikan Cancer Epidemiology Seminar and the latest awardee of the Robert C. Millikan Cancer Epidemiology Award. But this year, everything is upside down. The Millikan Seminar was canceled due to COVID-19, so I did not make my annual trip to Chapel Hill, NC. I struggle to know what to write.

A question we keep asking within our family is, "What would Bob say?" Bob's scientific knowledge was something we relied on. So was his compassion and humor. Bob was a great person to talk with. He cared deeply about humanity, social justice, and the land. His office was full of quotes and sayings taped haphazardly to the wall. Sometimes if I was going through hard times, he would send me poems, including ones he wrote.

In that spirit, I want to share with you a video of a piece of mine, Choro, that was Covid-canceled just days before its premiere. I hope it brings you cheer in these difficult times.

Happy Birthday, my dear brother, Bob.

Dearest Ann,
Thank you so much for your lovely peace. Choro comes at a heavy time for me, and your "cheers" are most welcome during these heavy days.
Much love,
Mom

Ann, such an incredible gift you have to write pieces like this and then to find brave people to sing them. I think of Bob all the time these days imaging that he might have been one who could have solved the Covid puzzle or at least lead the team who would. Miss his humanity and his incredible intellect. He was an amazing human being and this is the perfect tribute to him. Thanks, Ann, for putting such beauty into the world. ♥️🙋 Miss you!

Thank you, Erin! UNC is doing some great work on Covid, I'm sure Bob would have been involved in it. Miss you too, cuz!

Dear Ann and Mrs. Millikan,
Back around 1975, I started taking violin lessons from Bob. He was an excellent teacher, kind and patient. When he moved into a house in Encinitas on the corner of El Portal and La Mesa, he offered me a room and I took it. It was a great experience for me, and over the past forty-some years I have occasionally thought about him. Well, today I decided to google him, to see what became of him. I was shocked and truly saddened to learn of his passing, and I offer you my condolences. I was not at all surprised to learn of his accomplishments and am proud to have known him. Sincerely

Dear Larry, thank you so much for reaching out. I'm not sure if we ever met, but it's wonderful to know you took violin lessons from Bob; I didn't know he taught. I'm glad you found this website — a place we continue to honor Bob and his legacy. All best wishes to you, Ann

The first few lessons were at your parents house, but I don't recall meeting you. However, you have a cousin who either visited Bob at the house on La Veta (not La Mesa) or lived with us for a short time. I think she drove an old Studebaker car that needed a brake job. I could not remember her name until I read the email from Erin. I think it was Erin, and you must think I'm crazy. Ask her if she remembers me. If she doesn't then call me crazy.
Stay well,
Larry

I was 12, so we probably didn't meet. Erin is my cousin, that would have been her! I sent her back over here to say hello. All Best, Ann

Larry, yes I remember you. I think we were only there for 3 months or so. Then we moved again. I was working 2 jobs at restaurants and it was crazy. My car was a 1960 Rambler. I wish I still had her. I remember we were close to Stone Steps and I ran once with Bob on the beach. His legs were so dang long I couldn't keep up. I tried to match his footprints and had to leap to do it and fell over. He was amazing. Miss him a lot. Hope you're doing well, Larry.

Erin, your description of trying to keep up with Bob is hilarious. I remember him taking me clothes shopping one time and I could not keep up with him. He also made me try on something to get my size. I protested that I didn't like plaid shorts. And he responded, but we have to get your size!

I really enjoyed listening to Bob practice the violin at the house. I felt privileged and awe struct. It was intense but he was so humble and laid back. I wish I had googled his name much sooner and had the opportunity to congratulate him.
I am doing well thanks, Erin. I returned to my hometown in upstate N.Y. in 1981. Married 33 years, retired from postal service 10 years ago. My wife plans to retire sometime this year and we will travel as much as we can. I too, wish you well

Ann, I believe Bob is in that place where good souls go and surely proud of his little sister's accomplishments.
